In order to create a lasting shift toward a balanced and sustainable food system, urban farms must function on a larger scale within communities. This includes embracing a system of farms of various scales and types connected by efficient local distribution systems. To help avoid a crash of the world’s food supply, new methods and systems for growing food economically in, or near, urban centers must become common practice. Both soil-based and water-based farming operations will be used in “closed-loop” water and nutrient recycling systems that include new and innovative farming technologies such as aquaculture and algae microfarm production systems.
